But Is It Worth It?

Have you ever wondered what makes one bottle worth $37 and another worth $207? Same grape, same winemaker even. So what’s the big deal? In this members only event, we’ll be talking and drinking through three different offerings from Guido Porro in Piemonte, Italy. All three are 100% Nebbiolo, all three come from the same region. But changes - big and small - in the terroir and specifically the winemaking of these three bottles make all the difference. By the end of this hour, you’ll be able to decide for yourself — Is is worth it?

The very nature of the small producers we work with means we’re constantly changing what we showcase here at the shop. Often times, we get a very limited allocation of three to twelve bottles of the fun stuff we carry. We have a few last bottles now hanging out that we’re marking down so we can make room for new arrivals coming in spring, when wineries often ship wines that were bottled last year. We’ll also be laying out a few beers in a similar spirit.

Vertical Tasting

What effect does bottle aging have on a wine? Come answer this question for yourself as we try the same wine in three vintages, back to 2006.

About the Wine:

Domaine des Baumard Clos du Papillon Savennieres is distinguished from other Savennières of the domaine by its character. Fresh and full of minerality while staying powerful, it exudes all the aromatic richness and elegance of Chenin Blanc grown on a great terroir. I’m not exaggerating when I say the 2006 is the best Chenin Blanc I’ve had in my life, and is my benchmark for the grape itself.

Wine and Cheese Pairing

And we’re back! Pairing #5 is here, with a seasonally-appropriate theme. This time around, we’re focusing on alpine cheeses - aka any cheese that is made using methods similar to those made in the Alps. Think of the "Swiss" cheeses: Gruyere, Emmenthaler, Comte, and such. Alpine cheeses are characterized by their firm yet elastic texture, and low salt content. We’re pairing these with another mountainous region beloved for their wines - Alsace. The wine region of Alsace is unique in France because of the combination of grapes grown there. From German grape varieties like Gewurztraminer and Riesling to sparkling cremants to French staples like Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, there are a lot of beautiful wines made in this border region with Germany.

Very limited tickets can be found here. These have sold out every time so far, so get your tickets early!

Hosted Quintarelli Tasting

Hosted Quintarelli Tasting

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Guiseppe Quintarelli is one reason I own a wine shop today. From the first sip of one of his wines, I knew I was tasting something remarkable.

There’s usually competition surrounding who’s the “best” or “most renowned” producer in a given region… until you get to Veneto, where Guiseppe Quintarelli is the undisputed king. For six decades he revolutionized the red wines of the Veneto. If you’ve yet to experience Quintarelli, this is your moment. Full-bodied and rich, these are bold reds that will please lovers of blue-chip Napa, Bordeaux, and Tuscany.

The secret to Quintarelli’s wines is simple: time. From the moment the buds first open on each vine, nothing is done in a hurry at Quintarelli. In fact, the red grapes behind the estate’s most renowned bottlings are slowly dried before pressing in a process that further concentrates the grapes and yields extremely complex wines. From start to finish, many of these bottles are under the family's care for a full decade before release.

Today Guiseppe’s descendants continue to uphold and expand the Quintarelli legacy. We will be pouring three of his signature bottles for you, including the single most expensive bottle we’ve brough in here at Frenchy’s. I promise you will leave with a newfound appreciation for his wines, for Veneto, and honestly for winemaking itself.

Extremely limited tickets can be purchased here.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day!
Nov

Beaujolais Nouveau Day!

Beaujolais Nouveau – the much-ballyhooed cherry-red colored vintage that’s best served chilled — is clearly not for wine snobs. This fresh and fruity red is the result of a quick fermentation process that ends up with a tasty, clean wine that is enjoyed by palates the world over.

Beaujolais Nouveau owes its easy drinkability to a winemaking process called carbonic maceration, also known as whole-berry fermentation. This technique preserves the fresh, fruity quality of the grapes without extracting bitter tannins from the grape skins.

The Gamay grapes that go into Beaujolais Nouveau are handpicked in the Beaujolais province of France. The wine actually originated about a century ago as a cheap and cheerful drink produced by locals to celebrate the end of the harvest season.

Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé! Come enjoy these uncomplicated wines with us that represent the youngest bottles of the 2024 harvest. We’ll be pouring wines by the glass and selling bottles for the epic pairing that is Nouveau and turkey day.
